OF THE DISSERTATIONFundamentals of Treating Interference as NoiseByChunhua GengDoctor of Philosophy in Electrical EngineeringUniversity of California, Irvine, 2016Professor Syed Jafar, Chair Treating interference as noise (TIN) when it is sufficiently weak is one of the key principlesof interference management for wireless networks. This dissertation revisits the optimalityof TIN from an information theoretic perspective. It is shown that for K-user Gaussianinterference channels, TIN achieves all points in the capacity region to within a constantgap, if for each user, the desired signal strength is no weaker than the sum of the strengthsof the strongest interference caused by the user and the strongest interference suffered by theuser (with all signal strengths measured in dB scale). We also extend the optimality of TIN tomore general settings, including interference networks with general message sets, compoundnetworks and MIMO interference channels, and characterize the secure capacity region withina constant gap for the identified TIN-optimal interference channels with secrecy constraints. Moreover, combining TIN with interference avoidance, we formulate a joint signal space andsignal level optimization problem and propose a baseline decomposition approach.

Capacity Bounds and High-SNR Capacity of the Additive Exponential Noise Channel With Additive Exponential Interference
Communication in the presence of a priori known interference at the encoder has gained great interest because of its many practical applications. In this paper, additive exponential noise channel with additive exponential interference (AENC-AEI) known non-causally at the transmitter is introduced as a new variant of such communication scenarios. First, it is shown that the additive Gaussian ch...

In this study we explore the performance gain that can be achieved at the network level by employing successive interference cancelation (SIC) instead of treating interference as noise for random access wireless mesh networks with multipacket reception capabilities. More precisely we explore both the throughput and the delay of a distributed flow allocation scheme aimed at maximizing average ag...

We compute the exact rate sum of a symmetric Gaussian interference channel for the HanKobayashi region with Gaussian signaling for a subset of parameters in the weak interference regime. In this subset we identify three regimes of operation: an initial set where treating interference as noise is optimal, an intermediate regime where one employs a time-sharing strategy (with power control) betwe...
